I debated publishing this episode for a number of reasons. At the time of this recording (winter 2018), Dave Brat was the congressman from the 7th District of Virginia. Similar to his surprising win over Eric Cantor in 2014, Dave was (and a lot of people were) surprised by Democrat Abigail Spanberger’s win in 2018.
Even with Dave’s political tangents during the interview, what you will hear here is primarily leadership answers to my questions. There are a few parts of his answers that I took out of this recording where he went completely to a different topic not related to my question.
I believe this audience for this podcast is looking for leadership lessons and stories that they can relate to and use. There is plenty of that in this recording.
In this episode, you hear us talk about:
- I asked Dave what made him decide to run for Congress.
- In what now seems like a foretelling of his post-political career, Dave shares what he would have done if he hadn’t run for Congress.
- He describes what the worst leaders do.
- Dave gives career advice to young people preparing for the workforce.
- Dave shares a great story of his very first vote in Congress and the ripple effect it created.
- He answers why he agreed to do this interview with me.
- I even ask Dave a question that stumps him.
- and much, much more.
It’s doesn’t matter what your politics are or whether you would vote for him or his opponent, I think Dave shows that he is a likable guy.
I had conversations with several people after the event that completely disagreed with his political affiliation but appreciated some of his answers to the point they said that they considered voting for him.
I hope that you not only enjoy this interview but also get something valuable that you can use.
