Today’s episode is about, the top mistakes technology leaders make with training programs, and what to do instead.

This is a real topic that I work through with the leaders I work with. There are performance issues on the team and training is going to address them.

I know that you are wasting money on training if you are doing one of these three things:

  1. You are choosing training based on the title of the training.
  2. You are sending your team members to training programs to “fix them”.
  3. You have decided that training is the best way to develop your team.

And because you are doing one of these three things, I know that you are:

  1. Upset with the trainer for not training on the topic you saw in the training title.
  2. Confused why your team members haven’t changed after the training.
  3. Continuing to see your team stay stagnant in their role, performance level, and career.

If you have not seen your team grow in their career for more than 6 months to a year, then I know that you are relying too heavily on training to develop your team.

Inside The Authentic Leader Framework, I coach technology leaders to apply 1 of the 6 Factors of High Performance. When you master all 6, you will see huge results in your team’s development.

We don’t have time to give you all 6 today, so I am going to give one factor about getting the most out of training programs. You will not only increase your confidence in using training programs as a tool for development but also watch your team grow in new and more effective ways almost immediately.

Here are the mistakes that most technology leaders and managers make:

  • Because a performance incident on your team just happened, you quickly find a training program to correct the performance.
  • Out of frustration of a history of poor performance, you decide this an issue that has to be fixed and you decide to use training to fix the issue.
  • You know that part of your job is to develop your team by giving them new skills, but you don’t have a consistent tool to identify what they need most.

The problem of doing that is that you and your team start to see training as a waste of time and you not only spend your valuable budget but more importantly spend valuable time only to make little or no progress.
